A wireless site survey determines the required network capacity, wireless coverage, quality of service and roaming capability. It is usually performed before hardware deployment, but it can be performed after deployment as well to verify performance.

A pre-deployment survey, also known as AP-on-a-stick survey, is a type of wireless site survey. It examines RF signal strength to make a more effective WLAN design.

The survey requires you to make some important preparations before proceeding. Here is a wireless site survey checklist you must keep in mind:

  • Consider your network requirements beforehand.
  • Get the floor plan.
  • Walk through the space to be covered by the network.
  • Search for spots for wireless access points.
  • Run the site survey through a software or tool.
  • Move around the access points to find prime locations.
  • Note your findings as a guide for installing equipment.

Before the wireless site survey is done, site readiness is conducted to make sure the location is ready for the survey. It includes installing racks, backboards, and low-voltage cabling.
